Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator

Small but mighty, the Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator is quiet, fuel-efficient, and power clean enough to run sensitive electronic equipment all in a portable 28-lb package.

Powerful, portable, and efficient, the Yamaha EF1000iS Gas-Powered Portable Inverter delivers maximum electrical output without sacrificing portability. Thanks to its innovative inverter system, the generator is able to generate up to 1,000 watts of clean AC power. It can run up to 12 hours continuously without refueling and uses premium technologies to maximize fuel efficiency.

The EF1000iS is built around an innovative inverter system, which is able to deliver higher-quality, cleaner electricity than competing generators. It produces energy in the form of pure sine waves, which are cleaner and more reliable than most commercial power sources. In simpler terms, this means that you'll be able to confidently power delicate machinery without having to worry about the damage caused by unrefined energy.

Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator is remarkably energy-efficient, capable of running up to 12 hours without fuel while in economy mode. With its smart throttle load feature, the generator is able to dynamically adjust the engine speed depending on the output, thereby increasing the overall fuel efficiency. The generator also has an exclusive dual coil alternator stator, which reduces engine speed and reduces total fuel consumption. At just 27.6 pounds, this generator is also super-portable and features an easily portable design.

I actually own two generators - the other is a Generac GP17500E, which is a "brute" of a generator. I have that one connected to my breaker panel so I can power many outlets in my house. The Generac doesn't provide clean power though, so I wouldn't trust it for computers and my big screen TV. That's where the Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator comes in.

I lost power for 5 days during Irene, and 9 days during Sandy, and this little generator kept up wonderfully. I broke in the generator with 30w dino oil and afterward switched to Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic. I also use Marine Stabil in the gas and run it every month or so with a load on it. I never have a problem starting it.

I also bought a cheap hour meter that wraps around the spark plug. To date, I have around 100 hours on the generator and have been very pleased with my purchase. With window air conditioners becoming more and more efficient I wanted to see if the generator would power one. Trying a $129 Haier 5,100 BTU air conditioner from W@lmart, I first turned off eco mode and then switched on the AC.

Not even a hiccup. Once the compressor was running I turned on eco mode and it still kept on working, slowing down to something halfway between full blast and idle. Note that the AC won't start when already on eco mode but that would be too much to ask. Now Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator possible to turn off the big brute at night and still keep cool and quiet while burning only a gallon of gas. Well done Yamaha!

I made the mistake of lending it out to someone who didn’t follow my directions for running it dry before shutting it down, and now the carb is gummed up - one or both jets are likely clogged and the unit won’t run without choking. This is a common problem on these little engines and requires either taking it to a small engine repair place or doing careful work yourself. Note to those who buy one.

As I’m short on time and will likely screw something up I will send it to a repair depot, and will no doubt get it back in top shape again. Still, a recommended unit IF you take care of it. I added oil and fired it up to get ready for the storm. It started on the 5th pull right out of the box, and one pull after that. It is quiet but still louder than I expected.

Get a 50-foot cord and you won't hear it. Yamaha EF1000iS – Portable Inverter Generator ran my pellet stove using manual ignition with no problem, about 500W. In econ mode, it varies the speed when the feed motor kicks in like it should. For fun, I disconnected the stove and ran a small microwave on it, about 850W. It stumbled but didn't kick out. Probably should not run econ mode with heavy loads, but it did take the load.

Its small size makes it easy to store too. My Yammie is now drained of gas and sleeping in its box waiting for the next outage. My neighbors can't believe we didn't lose power during Sandie. I smile because I know the reason we didn't lose power is that I bought this generator and that we will never ever lose power again. Lucky I camp so I can use the generator in the summer.

Product Update:

It has (2) 110V AC and (1) 12V DC. You will need higher wattage for 220. Decide if you need the quiet and electronic controlled voltage output (such as needed for running computers, sensitive equipment, etc). If not, you can buy cheaper standard generators with 220V outlets. Definitely stick to 4 cycle equipment rather than 2 cycle which requires a gas/oil mix. 110V only. You will be 220 on higher wattage units.
