I write very few product reviews because little is important enough to me to share my experience and opinion. This Perixx Periboard-522 Wired Trackball Mechanical Keyboard is critical, so here goes. I have carpal tunnel and I have found it much improved after moving to a keyboard with a trackball. I started with the other manufacturer's product available here on Amazon and used that keyboard for a few years.

It was ok, but this Perixx product is FAR SUPERIOR in the following ways: it's significantly quieter with keystrokes; the trackball can be removed for cleaning; the trackball covers more territory/requires less effort to move the cursor. The key placement is a little different, but I found it easy to adapt. The right and left click pads are a bit more narrow than I would prefer, but the positives outweigh the negatives by far.

So, if you're looking for a mechanical keyboard with a trackball, definitely purchase the Perixx Periboard-522 Wired Trackball Mechanical Keyboard instead of the other brand/model. Disclaimer: I am a real person who sits and types all day at work and all night as a Ph.D. student and I was in no way compensated for this review. This is 100% honesty. If you ever dropped the ball from a Kensington trackball, then you know how aggravating even small blemishes can be when using the trackball.

These balls are sized nearly identically to the original Kensington SlimBlade balls and work as well as the original. The red color is slightly lighter than the original but not much. The only thing I would recommend is giving the ball a good cleaning with some form of detergent (I used hand soap) before use; straight from the package, there is some sort of light coating that does not allow the balls to work as well as they should.

Otherwise, I am thrilled to be able to continue using my trackballs without having to buy a completely new unit. That would be akin to stepping on one of these... Trippin' balls, that's it. The trackball mouse is smooth and accurate. The keyboard layout was easy to adapt to quickly. The only "complaint" I have is that Perixx Periboard-522 Wired Trackball Mechanical Keyboard is a little loud when you type, but honestly, that's such a small thing for me.

I highly recommend it if you are looking for a more ergonomic way to use a mouse at your desk. The back-lighting feature is really helpful at night, makes seeing the keys really easy, and can literally type in the dark. I would recommend this keyboard to anyone who is looking for a keyboard w/built-in trackball mouse, it's solid, sturdy, all in all, it exceeds my expectations and I go through a lot of hardware.

It is slightly heavier than the original Kensington balls, which could be a good thing (or bad), depending on your personal preference. I personally like the more "massive" feel of it. I don't believe this would fit the older models (white, with no scroll ring); I think those require bigger balls (get your mind out of the gutter). I recommend it, I just wish there were more color options!

I could see myself collecting these if there were colors other than red. Needed an ergonomic solution to save my arm. A large responsive trackball embedded in the keyboard on the right means arm does not need to extend anymore using a mouse. Easy to use and has a scroll wheel and buttons just below it. Yes, this Perixx Periboard-522 Wired Trackball Mechanical Keyboard is pricey, but I will save money by not going to physical therapy.

Bought the lighted version - love it. No guessing on the keys in dim light. The keys are "noisy (clicky)", with tall square keys with springs that create firm resistance (like they use to make them when computers were first new - I love that feel and responsiveness). Again, no guessing on the keys. The keyboard is rugged. Note: you will need 2 USB ports to plug into (preferable next to each other), but the keyboard itself also has 2 USB ports on it. Love this keyboard and trackball.
