I wasn’t sure if my wife would take to embroidering so I bought her the SE600 for Christmas 2018. She really took to embroidering as a hobby so we decided to upgrade to the Brother SE1900 Sewing and Embroidery Machine. As much as the SE600 impressed us, this one surpassed it by miles. We upgraded to 1900 in March 2019 and after a few months, we’re still very impressed by the speed, accuracy, and options included with this machine.

A thousand dollars was a little much for us but for the use, my wife gets out of it and the fun she has doing different things with it, the price was worth it. I wish we would have known what we know now before we bought the SE600. We’ll pass the 600 on to a family member but between the two, 1900 is the machine to have. My wife, who sometimes does sewing professionally, owns several sewing machines and several embroidery machines but says this one is the most useful of all.

My wife reports it is particularly outstanding on thin, stretchy fabrics that her older machines have problems with. She was just showing me a thin t-shirt she modified, and not only did the machine sew evenly without bunching or other problems but it even had a stitch that duplicated what a serger would do just perfectly. Like some other modern computerized sewing machines, this combination machine can do hundreds of fancy stitches.

As an embroidery machine, Brother SE1900 Sewing and Embroidery Machine has all the bells and whistles. Programs are transferred by USB, instead of the freak memory cards of the old days. There are a ton of built-in embroidery designs, plus for each design, you can instantly select alternate color combinations. My wife ran a few of the designs, and they turned out perfect. And unlike older machines where thread colors had to be identified by some number on the black & white screen, this machine also shows you the color itself visually so you can scrounge and match whatever thread you have on hand.

The color touch screen is both cheerful to look at and super functional, compared to the dreary little greenish screens and less intuitive button navigation used on older machines. My wife is particularly pleased by the large 5" x 7" hoop or work area this machine offers, as she frequently embroiders names onto martial arts uniforms for some friends of friends. Most names would not fit in the 4" x 4" work area offered by smaller machines.

For one thing, unlike woodworking or metalworking “combo” machines, there does not seem to be any downside to combining the sewing and embroidery functions into a single unit. She says there is practically zero conversion time when switching modes, so there is no sense in cluttering up her sewing desk with anything besides this and her serger. As a Brother SE1900 Sewing and Embroidery Machine, this machine performs superbly.

This is a workhorse of a machine. It sews great and has a 5x7 hoop. You can purchase a 4x4 hoop if needed. I own several of the Brother high-end machines and this one I purchased to leave at my daughter’s house for when I visit. My granddaughter is 9 and she can use the embroidery on it almost by herself with me just “helping”. It is easy to learn to use and you can download patterns with a USB.

It comes with different feet for the sewing side. The only thing missing is the ability to cut jump stitches but other than that, it’s a great machine for anyone to use. There is a steep learning curb with all embroidery machines which is why I would have preferred to buy from a local dealer. None were available. I was very surprised at the quick response I received to any questions I called or emailed to Brother corporate.

Product Update:

It was Brother SE1900 Sewing and Embroidery Machine or a more expensive alternate brand. For the features, the quality of stitching, and overall feel of the machine, the Brother does not disappoint. Excellent value for your money. Excellent … It has far exceeded my expectations. I have embroidered on multiple materials of varying thickness and textures (including leather) easily. (Make sure you use appropriate stabilizers and toppings where necessary for beat results).
