Love this Brother HC1850 Sewing And Quilting Machine! It bastes without bunching sews perfectly and it is easy to use. I am 64 years old and have been making clothes and household items since my twenties. I have a Brother's serger also. It was a bit of a challenge to figure out but I use it all the time and it’s a great machine too. I added a picture of some of the embroidery stitches that I tested.

Amazon had this machine as a black Friday deal so I bought one as a very nice Xmas gift.

The machine has not given me any problems or frustrations, unlike other sewing machines I’ve owned. I’ve been sewing all my life and always have to have a sewing machine nearby. This machine is just for those times when I visit my daughter’s home, in case I want to whip up a project at a moment’s notice. Also, I might find a quilt store nearby and that could create an emergency.

SO, I searched and searched, read reviews of inexpensive sewing machines that would be solid, reliable, and have at least a few extra features. I have a top-of-the-line Husqvarna and a Janome at home. I’ve also had machines that would never quite work right out of the box. A reliable, simple straight stitch was what I was looking for, a machine that isn’t too fussy about the tension adjustments.

I’ve had machines in the past where I was terrified to adjust the tension because it would make the machine all wonky. This was fine, easier than my Janome even. I wasn’t too concerned about weight and didn’t even check that so can’t speak on it, but I’m pretty weak and I am able to move it from table to table.

The stitches are all printed on a guide right there on the front of the machine and all you have to do is put in a number. I have tried quite a few and they work beautifully, not requiring a lot of adjustments. There is even a button for thread cutting. Love that. The one thing this does not have, which is admittedly something NOT required, is an automatically rising pressure foot.

So when you get to the end of stitching, you have to manually push up the lever that raises the foot. Now at this fabulous price, you wouldn’t expect that. just saying. The bobbin winding is simple and easy with a clear bobbin cover so you can see how much you have. It's sturdy, but the bobbin hook is worn out and it slips stitches and tangles at least 3 or 4 times for every hour I use it.

After reading the high ratings, I chose Brother HC1850 Sewing And Quilting Machine one, by Brother, always reliable, and I could not be happier. This machine runs smoothly right out of the box and handles super thin fabric and fake fur with lining with ease. I was shocked at how easy it was to thread, how quiet it runs, and how it adapts.

Product Update:

The advice is to use a jean needle when sewing through thick layers but it still worked with the original needle that has been used only for one day. Brother HC1850 Sewing And Quilting Machine must have responded to criticisms and improved their product or I just got lucky. Whatever the reason, Brother has made a sister in me. I have used the most basic SIngers and Janome’s and a few were more than adequate. But I love this Brother. It’s still a 5 star from me.
